How does it work?
Think of it like this: Zipping for Autism is basically a "crowd-funding" campaign with a sweet pot for all of the teams who raise $800 or more. What is in that pot, you ask? Why, its a choice of a Zipline Tour or an Adventure Park tour for you and your team through the trees in the heart of Asheville, North Carolina!
Where does the Money Go?
All of the money you raise will be used to support families in Western North Carolina. When we say "all", we mean "100%". Sheena and Jeff Greiner, the principle organizers of the event, feel strongly about improving access to supports for people in our local community. To that end, they have decided to donate all of the money raised this year to Lakey Gap Autism Programs and FIRST. Starting a Team
When you decide to start a team (right now!), click on the button that says "Start or Join a Team". Since you are starting a team, you will select "Creat Team". From there, you will be asked to enter your email address and create an account. If all of this sounds complicated, it's not. The system is fairly good at guiding you through. So, back to that "crowd-funding" thing...what the heck is that?
Crowd-funding is a fundraising model that incorporates as many people as possible (aka, "the crowd") sharing and seeking donations for a cause that they support (that's us!) When you form a team, you can recruit up to 10 members to help get you to that magic $800, with each member of the team reaching out to their network to help reach your goal.
How many people can be on one team?
Each team is limited to 10 people for Zipping; BUT you are encouraged to get as many people as possible to donate to your team page! There will be an option to "start or join a team" or "donate" depending on which you would prefer.
Sounds great! What now?
Once you decide that you want to start or join a team or donate, simply click on the appropriate button and let the magic of the internet take you where you need to go!
Should I keep my participation in this event a secret?
Absolutely not! Proclaim it from the rooftops! Tell anyone who will listen! Most importantly, SHARE YOUR PERSONAL AND TEAM PAGES with your social networks, via email, and on any other platform where you think people will see it.
What are Lakey Gap Autism Programs?
You may be familiar with their flagship program, Camp Lakey Gap. CLG has earned a place in the hearts of many in WNC as a place for autistic children and adults to enjoy a summer camp experience designed to meet their individual needs.
As CLG continued to invest in the lives of the campers and staff each summer, they recognized needs in the community beyond summer camp that could use more attention. With that, the CLG team decided to create "Lakey Gap Autism Programs" to increase its impact by offering the following services in addition to the summer camp:
Parent Support meetings
Vocational training opportunities
Talks by members of the local ASD community, including people with autism, parents, caregivers, and professionals
What is FIRST?
FIRST is an information, advocacy, and training organization for people with disabilities and their families. Funds raised by Zipping for Autism will be directed to two specific autism initiatives. First, they will help expand outreach to Spanish-language families and communities, a population in which autism is underdiagnosed and families and individuals are underserved. Zipping for Autism funds will also help provide PLAY Project training—an evidence-based, parent-mediated program that helps young children improve their language, development, behavior, and social skills.
