About This Event

Join local artist Sandi as she guides you in learning the historical art of pine needle basket making. In this class students will go step by step and create their very own small pine needle basket. Learning different techniques such as basic stitches, coiling, splicing and shaping as well as understanding the materials and how to finish your basket.

Every student gets their own starter kit which includes a pre-drilled wooden center, pine needles, waxed linen, artificial sinew, needle and gauge tube. Additional  Pine needles are available for purchase to make more baskets at home.

Instructor Bio:

Sandi Falk is a contemporary artisan who has been crafting intricate Pine Needle Art since 2023. Initially trained by Pomo elder Oshie McGrill and inspired by instructor Bea Acosta at the Gualala Arts Center, Sandi specializes in vibrant, modern designs that merge tradition with contemporary flair. Using long-leaf pine needles, colorful threads, and diverse embellishments, her work spans functional baskets, mixed-media gourds, and pine needle sculptures. Her creative process is entirely intuitive- allowing the colors and shapes of each unique piece to guide her hands and dictate the final design.

Sandi Falk is a member of both the Mendonoma Basket Makers and the Bay Area Basket Makers, her work can be found at the Coast Highway Art Collective in Point Arena and at The Dolphin Gallery in Gualala.
