Golden Bridge Program: Digital Literacy and Financial Fraud Prevention (am)

About This Event

Join us for an empowering workshop designed to boost your confidence online. Learn practical digital skills, how to spot and avoid financial fraud scams, and ways to protect yourself from victimization. Gain valuable tools, resources, and support so you can safely enjoy the benefits of the internet with peace of mind. 

This class will give adults of all ages the confidence to navigate the web safely and give resources about the available law enforcement support available for victims of fraud. 

Each workshop is 2 hours long with occasional breaks. 

Dates: Wednesdays July 1-22

Time:10:30am-12:30pm

Week 1 (July 1): Use Smartphones, Apps, & Texting/ Email & Internet Basics

  • What is the internet? Understanding networks and connectivity
  • Benefits of digital inclusion: Civic Participation, telehealth, and communication
  • Turning devices on/ off, using touchscreens and keyboards
  • Understanding operating systems (Android, iOS, Windows)
  • Practice: Adjusting font sizes, brightness, volume, and accessibility settings

Week 2 (July 8 ): Avoid Scams & Protect Personal Information

  • How to find and connect to Wi-Fi networks
  • Understanding home broadband vs. public access
  • Overview of low-cost broadband options in California
  • Into to online search functions and bookmarks 
  • Creating and using an email account
  • Practice: Connecting to Wi-Fi and troubleshooting, sending an email, using hyperlinks, searching for reliable information

Week 3 (July 15 ): Protect Bank Accounts and Identify Financial Fraud

  • What is cybersecurity and why does it matter?
  • Password safety, multi-factor authentication
  • Secure vs. suspicious websites 
  • Practice: Creating strong passwords and identifying fake login pages
  • Common scams 
  • Case Study: Social Security and fake DMV scams
  • Resources: FTC scam alerts, reporting fraud

Week 4 (July 22): Apply for Benefits & Services Online

  • Using Zoom, patient portals, MyChart
  • Accessing government services: DMV, SSA, Medi-Cal
  • Safe use of Facebook, WhatsApp,YouTube
  • Practice: Scheduling an appointment online
  • Guided review of most-used tools
  • Final self-assessment + certificate of completion 
  • Feedback and program survey

 

 

Instructor Bio: 

Albert Rivas, MA, is a nationally recognized public sector executive, strategist, and civic innovator who brings more than two decades of leadership in local and state government, community resilience, and public policy. He served 7 years with the California State Legislature, 12 years in law enforcement, and six years with the executive management team to manage a large City. He also served as appointed commissioner for First 5 Sacramento County, to lead policy, programs, and fiscal planning services for children ages 0-18, and local services for families. In March 2005 he founded Capitol Consulting, and in May 2024, he co-founded the Genesis Community Foundation, a nonprofit committed to equity-centered community development for adults 60+ and Veterans, public safety, and restorative reinvestment in underserved populations across California. As a founding member, Rivas has shaped the foundation’s vision of transformation through inclusive grantmaking and evidence-driven community programs. Under his leadership the program aims to enhance local public services related to: 

•Digital Literacy and Fraud Prevention Programs
•Tax Assistance Counseling for 60+ and Veteran Communities
•Justice reinvestment and reentry support for justice-impacted communities
•Emergency preparedness and community-based disaster resilience
•Workforce development for historically marginalized populations
•Youth leadership, higher education, labor union trades, and trauma-informed education
•Tourism and recreation initiatives for underserved communities
•Public safety initiatives
