About This Event
2025 Teen Animal Care Volunteer Program
You must be at 16 years old to volunteer at the Humane Society of Broward County. For those under 16 we have many other programs that they can participate in; some of which they can earn service hours. Please check out our Youth Programs section to see the other ways kids and pre-teens can be involved by clicking here.
The Teen Animal Care volunteer program offers teens the opportunity to assist in either the kennels or the cattery, where their primary responsibility will be to ensure the animals' living spaces are clean and sanitary. This includes tasks like picking up waste in the cages and following our standard operating procedures for disinfecting the areas. Volunteers may also be assigned additional tasks as needed, depending on the requirements of the day. It's important that teens understand the nature of this work and are comfortable with the cleaning duties before registering for the program. If cleaning tasks are not something they are at ease with, they may want to reconsider participating.
2025 Registration Information
Each 12-week session is limited to 20 teens and positions are granted on a first-come, first-served basis. Teens are limited to one session per calendar year.
The fee is non-refundable, so please make sure you are available for the orientation and training dates.
Teens must be 16 years old, and no older than 18 years old, by their session’s start date.
Teens must be actively attending high school.
The registered teen and a parent must attend the on-site orientation. There will be two mandatory training sessions and the teen must attend BOTH in order to be cleared to start. No exceptions will be made. Please make sure you are both available on the orientation date and the teen is available for BOTH one-hour training sessions.
Teen (with parental approval) must agree to criminal background check which will be processed prior to the orientation.
Teen must agree to come in once a week for 3 hours, for their 3-month session; same day, same time, same job (either animal care kennels or cattery). We do not offer make-up days.
Teens must be willing to do their job of working in the kennel or cattery when they are present. Failure to do so may result in being dismissed from the program.
If they attend all shifts, teens can earn 36 hours for school.
There is a $40 non-refundable fee that helps cover the cost of the uniform shirt, badge, lanyard and background check.
Teens can register for one session per calendar year.
Teens must attend the two training sessions. If absent from either, registration will be canceled.
If teens have volunteered for sessions previously, approval from the Animal Care Supervisor is mandatory. Returning teens MUST attend the training sessions. The Humane Society of Broward County reserves the right to cancel a registration based on past performance. If this is the case, the $40 fee will be refunded.
You will be contacted approximately 10 days prior to your orientation date as a reminder. A schedule will be sent at that time as well. PLEASE MAKE SURE TO SET CALENDAR REMINDERS FOR THE ORIENTATION DATE AND THE SESSION DATES.
Please view all DISCLAIMERS and check the box to agree upon registration.
