Drawing Sound: An Experimental Musical Art Workshop

In this workshop artist and musician Marla Goodman invites participants to explore different ways to transform sound into imagery and back again. Using one of the world’s rarest and most fascinating electronic instruments, the Theremin, Goodman will illustrate the connection between lines drawn on paper and sounds “drawn” in the air. Participants will have the chance to create and interpret their own visual soundscape collages using provided art materials, taking turns playing the Theremin, and experimenting with the Virtual ANS Synthesizer (which makes drawings into sound). The workshop culminates with a multimedia art performance where participants respond to what they see and hear, a common improvisation technique in jazz and other genres. No musical or art experience is required.
Following this workshop participants will be invited to perform their creations for general Tinworks exhibition visitors in the Tinworks Lyceum space. This class is recommended for ages 12 and older.
Space is limited to 20 maximum participants; registration required. If price is an impediment to signing up, scholarships for sponsored (pay what you can) registration are available upon request. 2:45–3pm - Participants arrive to Family & Community Space
3pm - Workshop begins
4:45pm - Clean up
5pm - Workshop concludes
5–6pm - Tinworks Lyceum space, Public Performance of Drawing Sound works from workshop participants
Many people are interested in this event and space is limited! We ask that you register only if you are committed to attending. If you are unable to attend your workshop please contact us within 48 hours of the event to ensure we are able to pass your class spot to someone on the waiting list in a timely manner. Tinworks understands that unforeseen circumstances may arise, but we ask that you contact us as soon as possible.
If registration fills, a "Waiting List" option will become available and you can select this to be added to a queue. We will contact these individuals as spots become available. Those on the waiting list may come the night of the workshop to be sold available spots if registered participants do not show, but will not be garaunteed a class position. Those on the waiting list are welcome to come and observe the class, however project materials are reserved for registered individuals.
We recommend arriving with plenty of time to park and get settled. Parking can be found in the Tinworks Art parking lot or surrounding streets. The free Bozeman Streamline bus route also has several stops in the area.
Instructor Marla Goodman
Bozeman, Montana-based artist Marla Goodman has had a 15-year obsession with an amazing electronic instrument invented in the early 1900s: the Theremin. One of the most challenging instruments to master, the Theremin is played by making precise hand gestures in the air. Its two antennae allow the player to control pitch and volume to produce everything from weird science fiction sounds to haunting melodies without ever actually touching anything. A fifth-generation Montanan, grandmother and self-ascribed community art activist, Goodman coaxes music from the air as she highlights the history of this incredible instrument.
