About This Event
Tinworks Presents
Circus On the Edge: Performing in Refugee Camps & Conflict Zones
A short film screening and conversation with Naomi Shafer and Paúl Gomex
September 3, 7 pm, Tinworks at Rialto
Tickets $12 — Free for students with a valid student ID
What does it mean to make people laugh in a place where laughter feels impossible? Join Naomi Shafer and Paúl Gomex for an evening of reflection about their years performing with Clowns Without Borders in refugee camps, disaster zones, and communities affected by conflict around the world.
Through personal stories, video, and conversation, Naomi and Paúl will share what happens when circus enters places marked by displacement and crisis—and what they learned about humor, human connection, resilience, and the complicated role of an artist in these environments. The evening will include a screening of Paúl Gomex’s film, The Beginning of an Adventure, documenting the early days of this extraordinary journey.
Event Schedule
6:30pm - Doors open. Food and drinks can be purchased upstairs from gute Laune and brought downstairs to the theater.
6:50pm - Tickets will be sold to waiting list participants present at the Rialto from ticket holders who have not arrived and thereby have forfeited their tickets.
7:00pm - Speakers will introduce the film, followed by discussion and a question and answer period.
9:00pm - Event concludes.
If registration fills, a "Waiting List" option will become available and you can select this to be added to a queue. We will contact these individuals as spots become available. We also recommend those on the waiting list come to the Rialto the night of the event to be sold available tickets the most quickly.
Parking downtown can be tricky, so we recommend arriving with plenty of time and using the parking garage located on Tracy Avenue or coming via public transportation.
If you have a question, or would like to request sponsored (pay what you can) tickets for yourself or your students, contact angela.yonke@tinworksart.org. Committed attendance requests only please.
