Capital Funding Applications 101: How it works, what to expect, and how to avoid common mistakes

About This Training

Join us for a 1½-hour workshop on how to navigate public capital funding requests and subsequent contract administration in New York City and New York State.

Speaker: Elsa Pereira, Elsa Pereira Group

More Training Information:

The workshop explains public funding processes from political allocation through agency administration, contracting, and reimbursement. We will discuss readiness, timing, and cash flow considerations, and will focus on defining a realistic, fundable project scope, distinguishing hard and soft costs, sequencing studies, design, and procurement so work remains eligible for reimbursement.

The session will combine structured content with live discussion, troubleshooting, and workshopping. The content is grounded in practical experience across multiple city and state funders and is designed to help organizations avoid common missteps that slow or derail publicly funded projects. This training is ideal for nonprofit leaders, developers, board members, and operations staff.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the basic elements of a capital funding request.

  • Develop realistic timelines from initial ask through reimbursement.

  • Assess what questions need to be answered in the funding request.

  • Avoid common mistakes that delay or jeopardize funding.

  • Develop advocacy strategies to develop long-term relationships with elected officials.
