Alebrije Makers: Form, Myth & Color November 7 at 10:30 am

As part of their award, the 2026 Ellies Art Teacher Travel Award Winners will lead a series of public programs for the South Florida community, drawing on the knowledge and experiences gained during their travels to create engaging, hands-on opportunities for participants to explore new ideas, techniques, and cultural perspectives. Made possible by the Art Teacher Travel Award, which provides $5,000 each to six public and charter K-12 school art teachers to support travel that deepens their knowledge and strengthens their classroom practice, these programs bring the educators' discoveries out of the classroom and into the community.

Join Jorge Avelino Fernandez and step into the vibrant folk art tradition of Oaxaca, Mexico, in this hands-on decorative painting workshop. Drawing from techniques observed directly in Oaxaca, this course guides participants through the intricate process of transforming pre-carved wooden alebrije figures into vivid, detailed works of art. Students will learn base-coating, micro-patterning, dotting methods, and traditional color mixing to create a fully realized sculptural piece to take home.
