About This Event
WHEN: Saturday, June 20th at 8:00 PM
Join the North Fork Arts Center in inaugurating our new Steinway B piano with a special solo concert by composer-pianist Bruce Wolosoff. This program brings together several strands of Wolosoff’s artistic world: his deep roots as a pianist-composer, his love of blues and American vernacular music, and his long engagement with visual art. The centerpiece of the concert is Rising Sun Variations, Wolosoff’s expansive set of variations on “House of the Rising Sun.” The program also includes Night Paintings, performed with projected images by David Salle, Edvard Munch, Vincent van Gogh, and Margaret Garrett, as well as a new work composed specifically for the occasion.
THANK YOU TO OUR PIANO ANGELS! Diana Gordon, Robert Chausow, Michele Semler, Tony Spiridakis, Lisa Gillooly, Ellen Darion, Roger Chudzik, Jane Stevens, Glynis Berry, Hideaki Ariizumi, Maggi-Meg Reed, Michael Schubert, Cindy Armine-Klein, Geri Armine-Klein, Allen Kraus, Lynn Parkerson, Christina Larkin, Margaret Cowden, Kathleen Becker, and Janice Claudio.
Bruce Wolosoff
Bruce Wolosoff is "a formidable pianist and composer" (Gramophone) known internationally for integrating classical, jazz, blues, and contemporary influences. He often composes in response to visual art. Bruce's music is regularly heard on classical radio stations worldwide.
His newest album, Blue Mantra, released last fall on Avie Records, features music for clarinet including Matisse Fantasies, Blues for the New Millennium, and the title work, inspired by a painting by his wife, Margaret Garrett.
Following the Avie Records release of Rising Sun Variations, a large-scale set of solo piano variations on "House of the Rising Sun," All Music Guide wrote that "Wolosoff revives in spectacular fashion the Romantic tradition of the pianist-composer."
His 2023 album Memento continues to receive global airplay, while his 2022 release Paradise Found: Cello Music of Bruce Wolosoff, with cellist Sara Sant'Ambrogio, reached #6 on the Billboard Classical Chart. Their earlier collaboration, Concerto for Cello and Orchestra with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, was hailed by Fanfare as "an instant masterpiece.”
A frequent collaborator with the late choreographer Ann Reinking, Wolosoff composed The White City, named "Best Dance of 2011" by the Chicago Sun-Times, and A Light in the Dark, an Emmy-nominated ballet inspired by Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan.
Born in New York City, Wolosoff studied at Bard College and the New England Conservatory. He studied with classical pianists German Diez, Richard Goode, and Jorge Bolet, and jazz pianists Charlie Banacos and Jaki Byard. Wolosoff abandoned public performance at the age of 30 to focus on composition, before returning to the concert stage in 2011 with Many Worlds. Since 2020, Bruce has served as artistic director of Reflections in Music, curating and performing in an innovative series of programs that seek to spark new ways of thinking about and engaging with the classical musical experience.
