In 2001, the Community Development Project was founded as a project of the Urban Justice Center to provide transactional legal services and contract negotiation support for New York City community development corporations.
Over the years, CDP supported organizers and community groups across the five boroughs as they advocated for a more just and equitable city, playing supporting roles in the passage of historic legislation and initiatives like NYC's first Tenant Protection Law, the state's Justice for Jobseekers Law, Right to Counsel, the commercial lease assistance program for small businesses, and the absolishment of the Tax Lien Sale.
In 2019, we outgrew the nest at the Urban Justice Center and spun off into an independent legal services organization: TakeRoot Justice. Although our name has changed, our commitment to a more equitable city for all New Yorkers has never wavered.
Join our staff, board, alumni, partners, clients, and friends on October 22, 2026 to celebrate our 25th anniversary with food, drinks, music, laughter, and solidarity. We'll honor some of the people and organizations challenging unjust systems and envisioning more just futures.
