Beech Leaf Disease and Forest Restoration 11/11/2026

About This Program

Beech leaf disease is spreading quickly through the forests of our region, and it has infected every American beech tree in several stands at Tenafly Nature Center. With a $566,290 Natural Climate Solutions Grant from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, TNC is launching a three-year project to restore 24 acres of the preserve.

Join us for a virtual information session to learn:

  • What beech leaf disease is, how it spreads, and what it means for our forests and the wildlife that depend on them
  • How the grant will fund tree treatment and removal, invasive species control, and large-scale native tree plantings with deer protection
  • What the project timeline looks like and how the forest will recover
  • How you can help, including volunteer replanting opportunities in spring 2027

The project also reflects the long-standing partnership between TNC and the Borough of Tenafly to uphold the conservation goals of the preserve’s original Green Acres purchase agreement. With an additional grant from the Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions (ANJEC) TNC will coordinate with Tenafly Environmental Commission to share additional information about BLD and help coordinate volunteers in support of the project.

Both sessions are free and open to the public, and each will include time for questions. The content is the same at each session, so attend whichever date works best.

A Zoom link will be provided once registration is complete
