Course Goals: This course will examine a fantastic case of dybbuk possession — of a man! — recorded in Moravia (southeast Czechia) in Old Yiddish in 1696. This account is so amazing that it is worth making into a movie (ATTN: Christopher Nolan). Besides action and suspense, students will learn about the history of dybbukim and about Old Yiddish, the type of Yiddish that was used from the 13th through the 18th century — much longer ago than our Eastern Yiddish! This text was recorded in a dialect that was probably similar to Oyberland Yidish, the dialect formerly spoken in western Hungary and Slovakia, of which we will hear some recordings. We will try to reconstruct how this text originally sounded.
Course Tools: Our main source will be Dr. Sara Zfatman’s meticulous and voluminous edition of dybbuk texts Tse tame, published in 2015.
Note: This course will be taught entirely in Yiddish.
