Saggar firing is a process where a piece of pottery is put into a container - called a saggar. Then chemicals and combustible materials are placed in the saggar. This process gives the pottery unique colors and effects. It is quite exciting to see these pieces come out, you never know how they will look but they are always interesting and unique.
Students can bring up to 5 bisqued pottery pieces. The pieces need to have been made with a Cone 5 or 6 clay. Pieces should be no larger than 9”x9”. Pottery made out of white clay can be very dramatic but any color clay produces great results. Pots with any type of finish on a pot produce unique and unusual effects. Pots that have been burnished or covered with terra sigillata can produce interesting results (contact the instructor for more information on how to prepare your pots in this manner).
Firing Schedule
Monday, April 27, 6:00pm - 9:00pm - firing the pieces
Tuesday, April 28, 6:00pm - 6:30pm - picking up pieces
