About this Event
BANG THE DRUM - Taiko drumming for people with Parkinson's
Come bang the drum! Explore the balance of the Mind, Body and Spirit when playing Taiko.
- MIND - learning simple drumming patterns and rhythms.
- BODY - small to big movement of arms and legs and also using the core for drumming. How to do it safely!
- SPIRIT - Energy that we bring, put out and receive when playing. Using our loud voice for timing and expression.
No experience needed. Sitting & standing options. Emphasis on “play”.
There is plenty of space in the venue for non-drumming guests, but drumming is limited to 12 participants.
INSTRUCTORS:
Ann Yamane began playing with Northwest Taiko in 1991 with the goal of studying and integrating aikido principles of grounding, energy flow and body movement through taiko drumming. Playing with others inspires her to keep moving and have gratitude for the opportunity to experience community.
Barbara Yasui started out as a "taiko mom," when her son started playing taiko in high school. For years she took him to him to practice, made costumes, hauled equipment to performances, and helped with taiko conferences, before starting to play herself in 2009. She is a member of Northwest Taiko, as are both her son and daughter, and loves playing taiko with her kids.
Mary Gross, has been a member of Northwest Taiko for 20 years. She was her father's athletic trainer during his 15 year journey with Parkinson's Disease and, at times, used drumming, music, and Taiko movements as part of his treatment. She is excited to build on those experiences and broaden access to Taiko drumming as treatment for Parkinson's Disease.
