Presented by American Parkinson Disease Association

APDA Florida Exercise Class - Port Saint Lucie

About This Event

For people living with Parkinson’s disease, exercise may be one of the most powerful tools to fight some symptoms and to slow the disease’s degenerative nature.

The APDA Florida Chapter is proud to present an Exercise Pilot in the community, providing free exercise courses to those living with Parkinson's and their Care Partners.

These pilots are to kick start a program in an under-resourced area, generating interest, promoting socialization, and ultimately showing the value of programs specific to Parkinson's needs. The programs will run weekly for 3 months, during which the participants will then provide feedback and be encouraged to help with the continuation of the classes.

Our Port Saint Lucie class will offer a course on Functional Fitness:

Functional fitness refers to a type of exercise that focuses on improving the body's ability to perform everyday tasks and activities with ease and efficiency. It emphasizes movements that mimic real-life motions, such as squatting, lunging, pushing, pulling, and lifting. This opportunity aims to enhance:

  • Coordination and balance: Functional fitness exercises often involve challenging the body's balance and coordination.

  • Performance in daily activities: By mimicking everyday movements, functional fitness prepares the body for tasks like lifting groceries, climbing stairs, and getting out of bed.

  • Strength and stability: By engaging multiple muscle groups simultaneously, it strengthens the core and improves overall body stability.

  • Mobility and flexibility: Exercises that incorporate a wide range of motion enhance joint mobility and flexibility.

Special shout-out to our program leaders and Community Partners:
