Photo Rags: Art Criticism Reading & Discussion Group

About This Event

A ‘rag’ is vernacular for low-quality publications--tabloids, smut, classifieds, etc. What does it mean to address the supposedly archival (photography) with the ephemeral (newspapers, blogs, etc.)?

This four-week reading group will meet once a week in the Fall of 2024 to discuss readings about contemporary photography practice through reviews and other published writing. The course is divided into two thematic sections: Commerce, and Subjectivity.

Artists discussed will include Deana Lawson, Sara Cwynar, Eileen Quinland, and Hal Fischer, with writings by Sheila Heti, Daniel Fuller, Matthew Leifheit and Gwendolyn DuBois Shaw.

All participants will receive a bound booklet of printed materials, which will be available for pickup at ACP, Wednesday-Saturday, 12-5 PM. A digital interface will also be available.

Schedule:

Meetings take place at the Atlanta Center for Photography every Tuesday, 6:30-8:00 PM for 4 weeks.
