Alf Eastergard, a deeply beloved professor, colleague, and friend, passed away on April 11, 2017. To honor his memory and the many contributions he made to our institution, the American University in Bulgaria established an endowed scholarship in Alf’s name.
Alf joined the AUBG faculty in the spring of 1997. In the 16 years he came to spend at the university he won the hearts of both his students and fellow professors with his charm, friendly attitude, and unique sense of humor. To this day alumni remember him as the teacher “who made accounting almost fun.” He considered it an honor to win the 2004 Coolest Non-Student, and then the 2013 Lifetime Achievement award from the More Honors Academy.
Throughout his career at AUBG Alf always strived to further develop his courses to benefit his students. He “exploited daily,” in his own words, all possible student communication platforms to provide extra study materials, and ensure wide and continuous distribution of ideas. As a faculty member he participated actively in the University’s Outreach efforts, served as the Coordinator for the Business Administration major, and took part in multiple committees.
Despite his deteriorating health, Alf did not give up on his sense of humor even in his final moments. Born in the U.S. shortly after his parents moved from Denmark, he joked with his nurses that he was smuggled into America, and if they turned him over, they would find a “Made in Denmark” sticker on his backside.
This is how the AUBG community will always remember Alf – with a big smile on his face and his ability to come up with a joke in even the direst situation.
Any contribution to the Alf Estergard Endowed Scholarship counts, no matter how small. Please consider making a donation, and share with your friends, colleagues, and fellow alumni about this opportunity to honor Alf’s legacy at AUBG.
