Volunteering at the Humane Society of Broward County

The Humane Society of Broward County has a robust volunteer program of over 600 volunteers to help care for animals both directly and indirectly. The structured and high-commitment approach ensures consistency and the well-being of both the volunteers and the animals.

  1. Structured Volunteer Program: We offer a well-structured volunteer program that begins with an on-site orientation and includes a thorough application and background check process and training.

  2. Volunteer Commitment: Volunteers are expected to commit to a minimum of six months, providing service on the same day and time every week. This commitment helps ensure consistency in animal care and programs. There are a few positions that do not follow a regular schedule like Education and Animal Assisted Therapy.

  3. Shift Length: Shifts typically range from 2 to 4 hours, which is reasonable for volunteers and ensures they can manage their time effectively.

  4. Orientation: The one-hour orientation is a crucial step where we explain our philosophies and provide an overview of the volunteer program. This ensures that potential volunteers understand the organization's mission and values.

  5. Adult Volunteers: The program is designed for individuals aged 18 and older who can work independently and do not have court-ordered community service requirements. This helps ensure that volunteers can contribute effectively and responsibly.

  6. Position Descriptions: Some volunteer positions, especially those involving large dogs, can be physically demanding. This is essential for volunteers to understand before committing to a particular role.

  7. Registering for a Position: When choosing a position, you will also commit to an orientation date and time. At the time of registration, you will be asked to pay the $40 fee that helps cover the costs associated with uniforms, access badges, and background checks. This fee is non-refundable so please make sure you are ready to follow through and commit.

  8. Application Process: After the orientation, prospective volunteers are required to complete an application and authorize a multi-state criminal background check.

  9. Flexibility and Safety: The organization reserves the right to change a volunteer's chosen position if safety concerns arise for either the volunteer or the animals, or if the position is not a good fit. We have a commitment to safety and animal welfare.

If you don't find a position that works for you, please check back.
Positions open up regularly and will be posted when available.

PLEASE CHOOSE ONE POSITION. If more than one is chosen, your registration will be voided and your desired position may no longer be available.
