About the Speaker

Dr. J. Michael Butler has written more than 50 essays, book reviews, and encyclopedia entries for various academic journals such as the "Journal of Southern History," the "Florida Historical Quarterly," and "Southern Cultures." His latest book, "Beyond Integration: The Black Freedom Struggle in Escambia County, Florida, 1960-1980," was published by the University of North Carolina Press in 2016 and won a 2017 Florida Book Award in nonfiction. In 2018, he was named a Kenan Distinguished Professor of History at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida, where he has taught since 2008.
