About This Event
Breach of Peace, Stories of the Freedom Riders of 1961
On May 24, 1961, 19-year-old Jean Thompson boarded a Trailways bus in Montgomery, Alabama with 11 other young Freedom Riders bound for New Orleans – and history. Within three months, approximately 300 other riders took up the mantle to desegregate buses, following the path of the first brave few. Mobs bloodily assaulted many. Others were arrested. Wiley’s drama BREACH OF PEACE is based on true accounts of surviving participants of the Freedom Rides and others involved in the early struggle for African-American equality. This solo-play is a living monument to those remarkable young men and women of various races, religions and backgrounds who rose to face the dangers of fighting for just and equal treatment for all.
Each ticket includes a free meal (vegetarian and gluten-free options available).
Meal service begins at 6:00 p.m.
Event begins at 7:00 p.m.

In 2025, Wiley and Howard Craft co-wrote two new plays: "Changing Same: The Cold-Blooded Murder of Booker T. Spicely" and "The Christmas Case of Hesekiah Jones." His 2022 play "Rebellious" highlights the Bennett College Belles' role in the Greensboro sit-in movement. Wiley’s 2021 work "Peace of Clay," co-written with Craft, explores a young teen’s dreams and obstacles in the 1980s South.
Wiley's play "Leaving Eden," with music by Laurelyn Dossett, had a record-breaking run at Playmakers Repertory Company in 2018. His earlier works include "Down Range: Voices from the Home Front" and "The Parchman Hour: Songs and Stories of the 1961 Freedom Riders."
