2025 Bench-Bar-Media Dialogue
Immigration and Justice: The U.S. Legal System Most Americans Never See
You're invited to join the Council for Court Excellence on Tuesday, September 30th at 6 PM for our Bench-Bar-Media Dialogue event, Immigration and Justice: The U.S. Legal System Most Americans Never See.
Judges decide the fate of many hundreds of thousands of immigrants each year, but these cases aren’t handled in a justice system familiar to most Americans. This Bench-Bar-Media Dialogue will explore U.S. immigration courts, an arm of the Justice Department that is facing a surge of activity – and public attention – in recent months as it contends with a backlog of millions of cases.
Our expert panelists will dig into all facets of the immigration justice system, including:
- How immigration courts operate, from issue an arrest warrant to a final ruling on whether a person can be deported
- How immigration judges are chosen and whom they answer to
- The relationship between immigration courts and federal courts, as well as where tension can emerge between them
- Transparency challenges faced by journalists covering immigration beats and members of the public seeking information about loved ones and community members.
This, and more, will be discussed with an all-star panel representing participants across all aspects of immigration legal proceedings.
A reception will follow.
MODERATOR: Leila Fadel, National Public Radio (NPR), Host, Morning Edition and Up First
PANELISTS:
- Rebecca Joy Walters, Senior Immigration Attorney, Wilkes Legal; former Assistant Chief Immigration Judge with the Executive Office for Immigration Review
- Hamed Aleaziz, Immigration reporter at The New York Times
- Lisa Zycherman, Vice President of Legal Programs at the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press
