What is a Big Sit? Founded in 1992 by the New Haven (CT) Bird Club, this Big-Day-like event is a friendly competition among birders all over the world to count as many bird species as possible in 24-hours… without leaving a 17 ft. diameter circle! This widespread event is held each year on the second Saturday and Sunday of October, coinciding with the fall’s World Migratory Bird Day.
This year, EBO will lead the Presque Isle Big Sit on October 10th! This is an exciting and easy birding event for bird-enthusiasts of all ages and experience levels. Birds will be documented from a circle of participants, keeping track of the total number of species throughout the day. Last year’s October Big Sit recorded a surprising 50 species by the end of the day!
EBO is looking for volunteers that are interested in community science, bird-watching, and education.
Join our Big Sit as early as 7:30 am, or visit any time through 8:00 pm. The circle will be located atop the mound at Fry's Landing, near the EBO banding station. We will have educational materials about migration. Please bring a comfortable chair and dress for the weather; bring snacks and drinks for you or to share; bring binoculars if you have a pair. We will need volunteers for various shifts. If you cannot attend as a volunteer, please show your support through a donation.
