Join us for the second installment of season 3 of The Heart of Culture Series, Somebody’s Gotta Tell James”, by Cakeswagg. This one-act play is an adaptation of Sonny’s Blues by James Baldwin. In this telling, Cakeswagg explores alternate endings for Sonny’s life brought into the twenty-first century.
By day, she inspires Boston’s youth as a theater teacher; by night, she channels those skills into her explosive alter ego, Cakeswagg. Hailing from Boston’s Roxbury neighborhood, Cakeswagg is a powerhouse live performer known for bringing big personality, crowd participation, and high-energy hip-hop to every stage she touches. Her performance at the Boston Calling Music Festival was praised by The Boston Globe as “highly dynamic and loads of fun,” highlighting her “massive personality and infectious energy” - think Megan Thee Stallion meets Chappell Roan.
A fixture in Greater Boston’s music scene, Cakeswagg has performed everywhere from Worcester Pride to Jamaica Plain Porchfest, building a loyal and diverse fanbase across the region. Her community support shows up in real numbers - over 200 fans packed Sonia Music Venue for her latest album’s release show. She has also proven her command of the stage in competitive and industry spaces alike, winning the crowd-voted “Master of the Chamber” battle-rap event and delivering the closing performance at the Boston Music Awards, where she also took home the award for “Video of the Year.”
As a theater & music educator, Cakeswagg is equally committed to shaping the next generation of artists. In association with the Boch Center, she teaches theater to students across Boston Public Schools from elementary schools and music to high school students. An accomplished actor herself, she recently starred in Kufre N’ Quay, the fifth play in Boston’s Ufot Family Cycle by Emmy-nominated playwright Mfoniso Udofia. She also teaches August Wilson monologues with the Huntington Theatre Company, introducing young performers to the cultural legacy of one of America’s most celebrated playwrights.
Cakeswagg’s latest album, Michelin Star, reflects her artistic evolution. Named after the prestigious culinary rating, the project expands beyond the lyrical rap she’s known for, weaving in rock and R&B influences and showcasing her singing for the first time. The result is a bold, genre-blending sound that mirrors her live show: theatrical, high-energy, and impossible to ignore.
