IJS Book Talk with Jeremy David Engels

About This Event

Jeremy David Engels, in Conversation with IJS President & CEO, Rabbi Josh Feigelson

Jeremy David Engels brings insight, clarity, and moral imagination to a conversation about his new book, On Mindful Democracy: A Declaration of Interdependence to Mend a Fractured World. In this timely and thought-provoking work, Engels explores how mindfulness, democratic practice, and a deeper awareness of our interdependence can help heal the divisions shaping contemporary public life. Drawing on philosophy, political thought, and contemplative wisdom, he invites readers to consider how attention, compassion, and shared responsibility might transform the ways we relate to one another across difference and within conflict.

In conversation with Rabbi Josh Feigelson, Engels will reflect on the spiritual and civic practices needed to mend a fractured world. Together, they will explore how mindfulness and Jewish wisdom can help us respond to polarization, fear with greater presence, and care, by offering pathways toward deeper belonging, democratic renewal, and a more compassionate public life.

This session will include Zoom’s auto-generated captioning. To enable captions during the event, simply select the "CC" icon in your meeting toolbar.

Jeremy David Engels is the author of six books, including On Mindful Democracy: A Declaration of Interdependence to Mend a Fractured World (Parallax, 2026). On Mindful Democracy presents a bold reimagining of civic life. Rewriting the Declaration of Independence as a Declaration of Interdependence, the book offers an antidote to political burnout and civic despair. It issues a call for a new politics grounded in everyday acts of mindfulness, compassion, and connection, reminding readers that true democracy is not a destination but a lived practice.

Engels is Liberal Arts Endowed Professor of Communication Arts & Sciences at Penn State University, co-founder of Yoga Lab, and a mindfulness and yoga teacher. You can find him in the classroom, lecture hall, on a meditation cushion, or a yoga mat, sharing his insights on how to become capable, compassionate, and engaged democratic citizens.
