In the final months of World War II, while bombs fell across Budapest, Zoltán Kodály completed his Missa Brevis. Premiered in the basement cloakroom of the Budapest Opera House during the 50-day Siege of Budapest, the work stands as a profound testament to faith, resilience, and the enduring power of art in times of crisis.
This project brings Kodály’s masterpiece to life while celebrating the remarkable story of Sister Constantina Kakonyi, SND — a Hungarian artist and refugee who later made Duluth her home. Sister Constantina created the original cover artwork for the first edition of Missa Brevis, and her decades of artistic work at St. Scholastica form a powerful connection between the music, visual art, faith, and the immigrant experience.
Featuring performances by Borealis Chamber Artists, alongside exhibitions of Sister Constantina’s artwork, historical materials, and community engagement opportunities, this project invites audiences to reflect on the role of beauty, creativity, and hope amid conflict and uncertainty. Through music and art, Missa Brevis reminds us that even in humanity’s darkest moments, the human spirit continues to create, endure, and inspire.
