The Librarians at the Canyon Theater

Join us for a free community screening of the Emmy award winning documentary film, The Librarians (2025), on December 3rd in Boulder Main Library's Canyon Theater, followed by a talkback with Boulder Public Library District Director David Farnan and Boulder Library Foundation CEO Chris Barge.

Drawing on historical context, The Librarians explores the broader implications of book bans on education and public life.

Librarians emerge as first responders in the fight for democracy and our First Amendment Rights. As they well know, controlling the flow of ideas means control over our communities.

In Texas, the Krause List targets 850 books focused on race and LGBTQia+ stories - triggering sweeping book bans across the U.S. at an unprecedented rate. As tensions escalate, librarians connect the dots from heated school and library board meetings nationwide to lay bare the underpinnings of extremism fueling the censorship efforts. Despite facing harassment, threats, and laws aimed at criminalizing their work - the librarians' rallying cry for freedom to read is a chilling cautionary tale.

Drop in early for a reception with light refreshments starting at 5:45pm in the Canyon Gallery just outside of the theater. Doors to the Canyon Theater will open at 6:00pm for open seating.
