Russell Lehmann - From Disability Compliance to Disability Connection: 5 Ways to Accommodate and Understand

About This Event

Russell Lehmann is an award-winning and internationally recognized motivational speaker, poet, author, and activist. In this powerful workshop, Russell explores five practical, unconventional strategies that move from surface-level awareness to genuine connection and empowerment for autistic and neurodiverse individuals. Through storytelling and honest dialogue, participants will learn how to create flexible, person-centered environments rooted in empathy, collaboration, and respect.

When it comes to autism, invisible disabilities, and neurodiversity, the “what” of accommodations is often discussed: policies, checklists, and compliance. But the deeper question remains: why? Why do some accommodations matter more than others? Why do certain approaches empower while others alienate? This session goes beyond surface-level awareness to explore five unconventional yet practical approaches to creating understanding and access. Through storytelling, practical strategies, and honest dialogue, participants will gain insight to move beyond rote compliance into genuine connection and empowerment.

Learning Objectives:

  • Differentiate between surface-level accommodations and deeper, person-centered approaches.
  • Apply five practical strategies to foster more inclusive and flexible environments for neurodiverse individuals.
  • Reframe understanding of “accommodation” by integrating empathy, collaboration, and respect into everyday interactions.

Key Strategies Explored:

  • Do Nothing (Wu Wei): Step back and allow natural flow.
  • Inquire Within: Ask, don’t assume, to uncover true needs.
  • Make a Deal: Collaborate on flexible, mutually beneficial solutions.
  • Adjust the Lens: Shift perspective to see through neurodiverse eyes.
  • Honor the Human: Center dignity, respect, and authenticity in all accommodations.
