About the Seminar:

Jonathan Coico, LCSW, and Margaret (Maggie) Davis, PhD, are excited to share their insights and expertise on the relationship between BPD and substance use. This seminar will begin with a collaborative presentation on BPD and substance use comorbidity and treatment grounded in both clinical and lived/family experience. To conclude, Maggie and Jonathan will discuss and reflect on their work and experience with BPD, substance use treatment, and advocacy before answering questions from seminar attendees. Attendees will have the opportunity to submit questions throughout the webinar using Zoom’s Q&A feature.

About the Presenters:


Margaret (Maggie) T. Davis, Ph.D.
Dr. Davis is a licensed clinical psychologist and Associate Professor in the Yale Department of Psychiatry, co-appointed in the Department of Psychology with expertise in the treatment and assessment of trauma-related psychopathology. Dr. Davis’ research focuses on identifying neurobiological mechanisms underlying the relationship between trauma, borderline personality disorder, substance use disorder, suicide behavior, and functional impairment. Clinically, Maggie has training and expertise in prolonged exposure, cognitive processing therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (various protocols), and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). She serves as the faculty lead for data integration and research management for the Yale New Haven Health Adult Behavioral Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), Chair of the Scholarship Committee for the Yale Predoctoral Internship Program, and Director of BPD Outreach and Education for the Yale Department of Psychiatry.




Jonathan Coico, LCSW
Jonathan Coico, LCSW, serves as an Emotions Matter Board member. He earned his undergraduate degree from Columbia University in the City of New York and his Master of Social Work degree from New York University. Currently, he serves as Outpatient Services Clinical Lead at Silver Hill Hospital in New Canaan, CT, where he designs, launches, and facilitates new group programming, manages all outpatient clinicians at Silver Hill Hospital, teaches MSW students, performs assessments, and other hospital-related leadership duties. Jonathan also owns Jonathan M. Coico LCSW PC, specializing in the treatment of severe personality pathology and high risk cases (including treatment of patients and families, as well as advocacy work in the BPD community).

9. Avoid explicit expressions of self-harm or trauma, which may be upsetting to others.
10. If at any point you express concerns about your safety, we will offer support. If your emotions escalate and we are not able to comfort you, we will encourage you to reach out to your support system or consult a mental health professional.
