From Field to Flour, NJ Grain Heritage Tour presented by Wakefern Food Corp
This self-guided driving tour traces the remarkable story of grain in New Jersey, its deep historical roots and its exciting modern revival. You and your navigator will explore historic gristmills, working mills, local businesses proudly using locally grown grain, and a thriving grain farm in action.
The Route:
Take in the beauty of the Highlands on this scenic 66 mile car trek through Blairstown, Chester, Long Valley, Oldwick, and Asbury. You will have the chance to explore Marksboro Mills, Cooper Gristmill, Chilton Mill Brewing, Ethos Farm Organic Market, Cold Brook Farm, Taylor's Mill and Historic Asbury Gristmill. This is an experience you will not want to miss!
What is a Car Trek?
A Car Trek is a self-guided driving adventure that combines history and scenic roads. Each car requires two people: a driver and a navigator using our curated Tour Packet to follow the route and enjoy the stories along the way. You don't need a special car to participate!
What to Expect:
-
A detailed Tour Packet will be sent two days prior. We suggest you print it out in advance or have your navigator access it digitally during the drive.
-
Begin the day with a tour briefing and your first official stop at our meeting location, Marksboro Mills. Enjoy a guided tour of an active mill, with start times at 10:00 AM, 10:30 AM, and 11:00 AM, scheduled based on when you register.
-
Follow the self-guided tour at your own pace, learning about the people, places and history that shaped grain production and its resurgence.
-
To round out your adventure, enjoy lunch at the The Ciderhouse at Ironbound Farm (lunch not included in ticket price).
From forgotten gristmills to flourishing farms — the Tour Packet traces New Jersey's remarkable grain heritage and the movement reviving it today.
