DISCOVERING THE TRUE ST. FRANCIS

Featuring Dr. Peter Kwasniewski

On the 800th anniversary of the death of St. Francis of Assisi, Dr. Peter Kwasniewski recovers the saint who has often been reduced to a gentle nature-lover and apostle for social justice. Drawing on Francis’s own writings and the earliest sources, the talk presents him instead as a fierce Eucharistic mystic: a man whose spirituality centered on the Mass, the Real Presence, and the dignity of the priesthood. Francis wrote with unusual severity about dirty or unworthy vessels used at the altar and treated the consecration as a continuation of the Incarnation itself—Christ coming among us as truly as He once came in the flesh. Far from a modern “peacenik,” he was a defender of Catholic doctrine who preached conversion even to the Sultan and whose deepest encounter with God took place not in the woods but at the altar. The evening at Old Spaghetti Warehouse in Carmel invites participants to meet this more demanding, more Catholic Francis and to see how his Eucharistic fire still speaks to the Church today.
