About

In 1876, missionary Charles L. Hall was assigned to "civilize" and "Christianize" the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara tribes of remote Dakota Territory. The extraordinary story of his rich and evolving experiences on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation is shared through Hall's own narratives, historical documents, interviews and more.

Rev. Hall's fascinating writings shed light on the complex dynamics of white-Indian relations, the daily joys and struggles of life on the Northern Plains, western expansion and its impact on Native lands and traditions, and Native American influence on Rev. Hall's own spiritual beliefs.

Discover ways in which Sitting Bull, Crow King, Lt. Col. George Custer and other leaders impacted Hall's mission from 1876 to 1922. This moving collection of anecdotes illustrates Hall's determination to help an indigenous population gain equality and justice, a struggle that continues today.
