Lunch & Learn: Black Cypress Preserve
Sunday, October 4th
10::30am- 2:30pm
Back by popular demand! Join renowned conservationist Dana Beach for a special HORT Lunch & Learn at the Black River Cypress Preserve, where we’ll spend the day exploring the native plants, ecosystems, and conservation efforts that make this landscape so extraordinary.
Dana will guide us through the preserve and its diverse native plant communities, including ancient cypress-tupelo swamp forest, longleaf pine savannah, and bottomland hardwood swamp. Along the way, learn about the restoration of the upland pine savannah, the return of fire-dependent grassland species, and the ongoing work to protect and restore these important native ecosystems.
Our visit will include approximately 1–2 miles of hiking on relatively flat terrain, followed by lunch together at the preserve’s Gin Branch Pavilion. Participants should bring their own lunch and water in a reusable bottle. Please wear comfortable shoes and dress appropriately for the weather.
Want to explore a little more? Bicycles are available for participants to use courtesy of the Black River Cypress Preserve.
Transportation is not provided. Participants will meet at the preserve, and carpooling is encouraged.
