This large four-story Greek revival house with Italianate detail was constructed circa 1857 on a lot subdivided from the pre-Revolutionary Miles Brewton property to the east. The current owners recently completed a detailed restoration of the house and hired Glen Gardner, noted landscape architect in Charleston, to design a classical Charleston garden.

One enters by the front gate and is immediately greeted by a walkway with boxwoods and gardenias and a vintage urn overflowing with seasonal planting. In the distance is an array of large camellias, sasanquas, and tree ferns, part of the first garden room. Four boxwood-edged paisley-style parterres, filled with annuals, and a bubbling fountain are the stars of this garden. Antique stone urns filled with seasonal color and two large live oaks complete the setting.

Oyster shell paths provide access from the lower piazza as well to the drive overseen by four ‘East Palatka’ hollies underplanted with azaleas and ferns. Throughout this garden, like the entrance walkway, Japanese ardisia ground cover wanders magically in shady spots. Dividing the first garden from the second garden is a newly created Moorish-style gazebo for outdoor entertaining.

Each boxwood-lined quadrant contains a large Japanese maple as well as sasanquas, gardenias, and perennials. Rimmed Italian terra cotta pots hold Meyer lemon trees with seasonal plantings. Lovely views of the columned piazzas and kitchen house can be seen from the pool or terrace.

Between the pool terrace garden and the last garden is a small brick walkway dividing the area into four parts containing salvias and perennials anchored by camellias. A lidded stone urn is surrounded by a bluestone path leading to the last garden room.

Two columns found on the property, and thought to be part of the original Myles Brewton garden temple, host an espaliered fig tree set into an arched alcove of a sophisticated garage. A true classical garden retreat!
