About This Event

Lunch & Learn: Midday at Stono Preserve with Dr. Matt Rutter

Thurs, December 11 @ 10 am

Stono Preserve - Hollywood, SC

Join us for a fascinating midday escape to the College of Charleston’s Stono Preserve—a stunning 981-acre living laboratory along the Stono River and Intracoastal Waterway.

Our guest speaker, Dr. Matt Rutter, Professor of Biology and Academic Director of Stono Preserve, will take us behind the scenes of this extraordinary property. Dr. Rutter’s research sits at the intersection of evolution, genomics, and ecology, using plants like Arabidopsis thaliana to explore how mutation drives evolutionary processes. He’s also a passionate educator, having earned the William V. Moore Distinguished Teacher-Scholar Award and multiple honors for excellence in student mentorship.

You will learn about:

  • The incredible diversity of Stono Preserve’s ecosystems—from longleaf pine forests to tidal marshes.

  • How this space is being restored as a true “conservationist’s classroom” in partnership with the Lowcountry Land Trust.

  • The cutting-edge research opportunities that prepare College of Charleston students to be leaders in a rapidly changing environmental world.

This is your chance to see how science, education, and conservation meet right here in the Lowcountry—and to enjoy a thoughtful discussion in an unforgettable natural setting.

Lunch is on us - please bring a chair and wear comfortable walking shoes.

Space is limited — reserve your spot early!

CHS Member price: $35 //Non-members: $55
