Emily McDowell is the founder, and former author and artist, behind the stationery and gift brand Em & Friends. In 2015, with the introduction of the brand’s “Empathy Cards” for serious illness and loss, Emily’s work inspired a sea change to the greeting card industry. Offering a more supportive and honest alternative to traditional sympathy cards, and informed by Emily’s experience with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, these cards struck a nerve around the world. Emily’s work has been featured in hundreds of global media outlets, including The New York Times, Good Morning America, NBC Nightly News, BBC News, Al-Jazeera, and NPR's All Things Considered.
In 2022, Em & Friends was acquired by Barnes & Noble, and Emily parted ways with the company; she now works as an advisor, consultant, teacher, speaker, and writer. Emily is also the co-author and illustrator of the book, There Is No Good Card for This: What to Say and Do When Life Gets Scary, Awful, and Unfair to People You Love(HarperOne, 2017), and the co-author of the upcoming card deck “How To Be Lost” (Chronicle, 2027). You can find her at emilyonlife.com, and IRL in Oaxaca, Mexico.
