Tea Ceremony for World Peace

The Japanese Tea Ceremony returns to LongHouse, this year for a special Peace Bell tea ceremony hosted by Urasenke members to commemorate the International Day of Peace (September 21). Please join us in the garden to pray for peace over a bowl of tea. The gathering will begin at the Gateway Bell, an iconic artwork by Toshiko Takaezu, and will be followed by a workshop and demonstration.

Since the 12th Century, matcha has been offered to Buddhist monks, aristocracy, and samurai lords in Japan. In the 16th Century, Grand Tea Master Sen Rikyu established the foundation for Chado, the Way of Tea, through Zen-inspired principles of Wabi-Sabi. Today, Chado remains a spiritual and aesthetic discipline for self-refinement.

This authentic Urasenke Chado will be presented by Ayako Souryo Takamoto (the great-granddaughter of the 14th Grand Tea Master), Yuka Souyu Yamazaki, Yoko Sanada, Takuya Suzuki, and Chisato Konda. 

Sessions will be held at 11:00 am and 2:00 pm.
