About This Event
In partnership with The American Chestnut Foundation - join Foothills Conservancy staff and volunteers to help plant more Chestnut Trees at Oak Hill Community Park and Forest!
What: Planting specially selected American Chestnut Tree saplings. Community Volunteer Event!
When: Saturday, November 21st, 9am - 12pm
Why: The American Chestnut tree was once ubiquitous in many Eastern US forests. The fruits of the tree fed humans and nonhumans alike, and was a staple part of healthy and resilient habitats. Even after the displacement of indigenous peoples, American Chestnuts continued to be an important cultural resource for original people and settlers alike. A deadly pathogen introduced in the late 1800s decimated populations of this species. Now, The American Chestnut Foundation works to re-establish this tree through research of blight resistant populations, hybridization, and careful pollination.
Labor involved: heavy lifting, placing trees, carrying heavy potted saplings, hiking over rough and uneven terrain both gravel and earthen, other labor as required
Tools Involved: shovels, digging bars, other tools as required
