Advocacy in Action: How Nonprofits Can Engage Responsibly

Registration ends Wednesday, 04/08/2026 5:00pm MDT

About This Event

April 9, 2026 | 9:00am - 12:00 noon | Virtual training via Zoom

Ever wonder what advocacy looks like in action? Learn alongside a Colorado nonprofit expanding its impact beyond direct service by engaging their community in civic participation. While running mobile food markets, the organization starts a voter registration drive at food distribution events, helping hundreds of community members register to vote. When a statewide ballot measure to increase access to healthy food for children appears on the ballot, the nonprofit participates in grassroots lobbying by educating community members about the proposal and encouraging them to share their perspectives. Building on that momentum, the organization later engages directly in the Colorado legislative process by helping inform the drafting of a bill to expand healthy food access, meeting with legislators, and bringing community members to testify at the state Capitol.

Advocacy is a powerful way for nonprofits to address the root causes of the challenges their communities face. Join us for this three-hour, interactive workshop designed to help nonprofit staff and leaders understand how to engage in voter outreach and policy advocacy confidently, responsibly, and within 501(c)(3) limits. Through practical examples, small group discussion, and collaborative exercises, participants will explore the foundations of nonprofit lobbying in Colorado.

During the session, we will cover:

  • An assessment of your organization's advocacy readiness, including internal capacity, leadership support, and alignment with mission and community priorities

  • A deeper understanding of nonpartisanship as defined by the IRS

  • The difference between advocacy and lobbying

  • How nonprofits can engage in policy work responsibly and effectively while maintaining compliance with federal and state rules, including how to determine whether the 501(h) election is a good option for your organization

  • The difference between grassroots lobbying and direct lobbying

  • Practical guidance on engaging policymakers and legislators

  • Colorado-specific lobbying reporting requirements

This workshop is ideal for nonprofit staff, executive directors, and board members who want a practical introduction to voter outreach, lobbying and policy engagement in Colorado. Whether your organization is just beginning to explore advocacy or looking to strengthen your current approach, this session will provide the tools and confidence to get started.
