About This Event

July 28th: The First 10 Pages: Why Agents and Editors Stop Reading with David Legere (Woodhall Press)

In this craft-focused workshop, we will look closely at the most common mistakes writers make in their opening pages and why they often cause agents and editors to stop reading. We will discuss issues like throat clearing, backstory dumps, low stakes openings, and passive protagonists, and explore practical ways to make your first pages immediately engaging and hard to put down. Writers will leave with a clear understanding of how to revise their openings so that readers feel pulled into the story from the very first paragraph.

David LeGere is an Editorial Director at Globe Pequot Press and Publisher of Woodhall Press, with over 17 years of experience in trade nonfiction, fiction, gift, and outdoor publishing. He also teaches English, hosts the podcast Publish This! Over Lunch, and produces literary events and prizes including the Connecticut Literary Anthology.

Workshop is limited to 12 participants, so be sure to register now! Writers at all levels are welcome to attend.

$30 gets you 90 minutes of instruction in the Workshop Gallery at Ball & Socket Arts.

**If cost presents a barrier to your participation, please reach out to our team for options at info@ballandsocket.org.
