Crisis Ready Media is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing holistic and specialized hostile environment and first aid education to all journalists, with a particular focus on those from under-served communities and those lacking the resources of larger media outlets.

For far too long, journalists working in the United States have lacked a resource that specifically prepares them for the hazards involved with domestic reporting.

To focus on that specific need, Crisis Ready Media, a Center for Journalist Safety, has developed the domestic HEFAT course (D-HEFAT). This program equips journalists with the critical skills needed to operate in the high-risk environment of today’s media landscape. The 2-day curriculum covers topics including:

  • Physical safety and security techniques: Participants will learn essential skills for staying safe in the field, including situational awareness, risk assessment, de-escalation tactics, and evacuation procedures and personal protective equipment protocols.
  • Digital security protocols: The course delves into the importance of digital security. This includes protecting online communications, mitigating the risks of social media use, and understanding how our digital footprint can impact physical safety.
  • Mental wellness and resiliency: Journalists working in stressful environments are particularly vulnerable to mental health challenges. The D-HEFAT course equips participants with coping mechanisms and strategies for building resilience.
  • Ethical and legal obligations: The course explores the ethical considerations journalists face in domestic hostile environments, along with legal frameworks relevant to press freedom and safety.
  • Traumatic first aid training: Participants gain essential skills for administering first aid in the event of injuries sustained during unrest or conflict situations.
  • Each participant will depart the program with an individual first aid kit, a bump cap, and safety glasses.
