Lisa has devoted her life to giving children meaningful and rewarding experiences to honor the memory of her beloved son, Emmet. Through her compassionate work and endless dedication, Lisa exemplifies the true meaning of a Woman of Action.

Award given in memory of David Bennett Kanarek, z”l.

Lisa Manheim
2025 Women of Action Honoree

Lisa was teaching middle school English in Westchester, New York when her 9-year-old son, Emmet, was diagnosed with a rare bone marrow disorder. Despite enduring intensive immunosuppressive therapy and three bone marrow transplants, he died at the age of 10.

Emmet’s death spurred Lisa to keep Emmet’s spirit alive in ways that celebrated his life. With the help of their community, Lisa and her husband built Emmet’s Playground at Temple Beth El in Stamford. In addition, Lisa spearheaded both Emmet’s Book Drive, contributing over 25,000 books to the Stamford Public Schools, celebrating Emmet’s love of reading; and the Emmet Manheim Scholarship Fund at Camp Tevya, where Emmet attended overnight camp. Lisa has been active at Temple Beth El serving many roles including President of the Board of Trustees.

Shamash Award Recipient – Ruthie Price

We are proud to present this inaugural award to a rising leader whose light inspires others—our first-ever recipient is Ruthie Price of Stamford. Given in memory of Herbert Rubin, of blessed memory.

While this event honors two extraordinary women, we welcome and encourage men to attend and be part of the celebration.
