Saturday, June 13th - CVPC Two Dam Hike

About This Event

Saturday, June 13th at 9:30 am  (Longer and Shorter) and 2:00 pm (Shorter)

Join Cromwell Valley Park Council to hike and explore our park and its important structures within and adjacent to our 460+ acres.   Leaders will discuss the history of scenic and iconic spots along the way.

Choose one option during registration:

  1. Two Dam Close - Shorter Hike - led by Raul Oteiza - 4 miles long, 476 ft incline / descent - approx. 2 - 2.5 hours.   Difficulty:  Moderate.
     
  2. Two Dam Far - Longer Hike - led by Ray Reed - 9 miles long, 1143 ft incline / descent - approx. 4.5 - 5 hours.   Difficulty:  Moderate to Strenuous.
     
  3. JUST ADDED - A 2:00 PM SHORTER HIKE - BY POPULAR DEMAND!   led by Raul Oteiza - 4 miles long, 476 ft incline / descent - approx. 2 - 2.5 hours.   Difficulty:  Moderate.

Both dam hikes will start out together, then separate at the crest of the "new" dam.

Age:   Experienced hikers ages 18+
 

Though we love our furry friends, NO PETS ALLOWED on this hike.

Departure Meeting Spot:  Sherwood House Parking - Grass Lot

Both hikes will end at the Sherwood House, with lemonade and cookies for a brief social gathering.   Interesting stops along the way will be the Balancing Reservoir, Loch Raven Reservoir, the Lower (old) Dam, and the Upper (new) Dam, to name a few areas of interest.

What to Bring

  • Appropriate clothing.  Shorts should be fine, but we will go through some undergrowth.  Is you are sensitive, were long pants.
  • Appropriate footwear.  Boots are recommended, but sturdy hiking shoes will suffice.  We will be fording the Big Gunpowder Falls.  This time of year we will likely be hopping rocks, but you may want waterproof footwear in case you step in the water.
  • Sufficient drinking water – at least 1 liter/quart.
  • Energy snacks if you desire.
  • Hiking staves are not necessary, but if it helps (especially fording the Big Gunpowder Falls) bring them.

TWO DAM FAR AND TWO DAM CLOSE HIKES  RULES:

  1. Age Minimum:  18
  2. No pets, sorry!
  3. NO ALCOHOL.  NO TOBACCO. NO NON-PRESCRIPTION DRUGS.
  4. Leave no trace.   Pack it in, pack it out.
  5. Hiking at the pace of the slowest participant.
  6. Everyone will be courteous and respectful of all others at all times.
