What is a Bird Sit?
This is a free stationary, drop-in birding event. It is designed with mobility access in mind and is for anyone interested in birds. Park Naturalist, Laura Lechtzin will be the event leader. She will be available for the entire event along with co-leader Ben Banaag. The leaders will be sharing information about bird identification, how to use binoculars and other bird related fun facts! Birds we may observe include soaring, resident and migratory birds.
Location: Cromwell Valley Park’s Hawk Watch area. Arrival and departure times are flexible. Join us anytime between 9:30 am – 12:00 PM. Everyone is welcome to gather along the staff access road and grassy areas. Signs and orange traffic cones will mark the area on the day of the event.
Park Facilities, Terrain and Environment
• Surfaces: There are both asphalt and grassy areas at the Hawk Watch viewing site.
• Seating: There are 8 backless benches and 4 picnic tables available. Please feel free to bring your own foldable chair or stool if you would like.
• Restrooms: There are two Porta-potties. One has accessible features. Both are 300 feet west of the Hawk Watch area.
• Sound considerations: The Willow Grove side of the park is under construction. Background noise from construction vehicles may be present, but unlikely on a Sunday.
• Shade: Trees line the southwest side of the Hawk Watch area. Partial shade may be available during this time of day.
Transportation and Parking
• Public Transit: There is currently no direct public transit lines to the park.
• Parking: Free parking is available in the Sherwood House lot. There are 60 parking spaces (3 are accessible with one van accessible space). We can also provide parking for 3-4 vehicles within 25-30 ft of the Hawk Watch site, along the staff road, with advance notice.
Planning Ahead
•Viewing Options: Please bring any optics you would like, such as binoculars, monocular, or a spotting scope. We will also have at least one spotting scope and 10 pairs of binoculars for participants to use.
•Consider bringing: A sun hat, water bottle, snack and/or bug spray.
•Extreme Weather If we need to cancel due to extreme weather an email will be sent out to all participants before 8 AM the morning of the event.
