About This Event
Course Description: This 15-week course is designed for caregivers who support individuals who use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), or for those who are interested in simply learning more about AAC. This course provides practical strategies, hands-on activities, and community support to building confidence and skill in supporting AAC use at home. Each 45-minute session focuses on a key topic to help you better understand your AAC user’s needs, how communication works across different settings, and how you can be a powerful communication partner. While parents receive education, children using AAC will be engaged in a structured play group. This course is designed for parents, family members, and caregivers of AAC users of all ages and communication levels as well as the individual using AAC
What parents/caregivers will learn:
What AAC is and how it supports engagement in the community
Strategies to encourage communication during daily routines
How to grow your AAC user’s vocabulary and independence
What to do when your AAC user isn’t using their system
How to collaborate with your child’s team and troubleshoot challenges
What AAC users should know:
This group offers a fun and supportive space to develop social and communication skills using AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) with peers. Engaging with AAC in a group setting supports viewing it as a natural, effective way to connect and communicate with others. Research shows that AAC supports overall communication development by enhancing language skills, social interaction, and confidence in self-expression. Any AAC modality is welcome in this group, including speech-generating devices, picture exchange cards, and sign language
Age range for play group: 3-13 years; parents/caregivers are welcome to participate in the parent education portion regardless of age of child!
