The Power of Protest: A Conversation with Annie Leonard and André Carothers

Registration ends Friday, 12/04/2026 4:00pm PST

About This Event

Throughout history, peaceful protest has been a powerful force for change, advancing civil rights, environmental protections, free speech, and countless other movements for social progress. Berkeley has played a particularly important role in that history, with generations of activists organizing to build a more just, equitable, and sustainable world.

Today, as the right to protest faces growing threats, understanding its history and protecting its future is more important than ever.

Join the Ecology Center for an engaging evening with Annie Leonard, creator of The Story of Stuff and former Executive Director of Greenpeace USA, and André Carothers, founder of the Rockwood Leadership Institute and longtime environmental and social justice advocate. Together, they'll explore the history and power of peaceful protest, the challenges facing this fundamental democratic right, and how collective action can help shape a better future.

The conversation will draw from their new book, Protest: Respect It, Defend It, Use It, a visually rich celebration of the movements and people who have used peaceful protest to drive meaningful change.

The evening will include an opportunity to connect with fellow community members, hear directly from the authors, participate in an audience Q&A, and purchase signed copies of the book. Light refreshments will be provided.

Join us for an evening of conversation, community, and inspiration as we reflect on the power of protest to create lasting change.
