About This Event
Led by artist and architectural lighting designer Rob Long, this multi-part workshop explores the creative possibilities of long-exposure photography during the transition from day to night. Participants will experiment with changing light, movement, time, and abstraction in both urban and natural environments.
The workshop begins with an introductory session featuring Rob’s work, key techniques, and discussion of participants’ interests. Through readings and conversations, we’ll explore the ideas and practices of artists who engage with light, perception, and the liminal. Two field sessions, one urban and one natural, will provide opportunities to experiment with photographing in different environments during transitional light at twilight. The workshop concludes with a group share and feedback session, giving participants space to reflect, discuss their work, and refine their approach. We will focus on mindfulness, intentional seeing, and developing a more experimental photographic practice through learning new skills.
Skill/Experience Level
An interest in long-exposure and experimental photography, and working knowledge of using in-camera light meter and manual exposure settings would be helpful. Both digital and film photographers are welcome. Please bring your own camera and tripods.

Artist Bio
Rob Long is a professional artist and Principal of Clear Story, a Pittsburgh-based design and consulting firm he founded in 2007. Rob’s creative practice bridges the disciplines of architecture, theatre and fine art—working with light and technology to create dynamic and memorable experiences. His photographs are held in private and institutional collections.
Rob’s abstract photography practice exists at the intersection of his work as an artist and architectural lighting designer. Observing light in the public realm, exploring movement and timing, gesture and line, color and form—he situates himself in spaces that feel sacred and quiet, where the light is layered and the contours of the landscape pronounced. Seeking compositions of surfaces, reflections, points of light, and using in-camera techniques to manipulate light and elements of the scene, the images in this body of work are alchemic experiments of chance and intentionality, rooted in a clear vision of possibility.
