About This Event
Friday, October 9 | 6pm to 7:30pm
Graduate student Georgia Vasey will be presenting on her research related to restoring California coastal prairies with prescribed fire. She will first give an overview of how fire is affecting aboveground and belowground processes in coastal prairies within the Central Coast, then dive into preliminary results on reestablishing native wildflowers at Wilder Ranch State Park. Anyone interested in learning more about fire management and coastal blooms will benefit. Georgia will also touch on her works' relevance with montane meadow ecosystems and restoration.
Hosted in partnership with the CA Native Plant Society: Tahoe and Sierra Valley Chapter.
About the Speaker
Georgia Vasey is a fifth-year Environmental Studies PhD student in the Holl Restoration Ecology Lab at UC Santa Cruz. She studies how to restore California coastal prairie ecosystems, with an emphasis on fire management and annual wildflowers. She holds an MS in Natural Resources and Environmental Science from the University of Nevada Reno, where she studied trait variation and climate adaptation of singleleaf pinyon pine using field sampling and common garden experiments across environmental gradients. Her prior work experience includes leading restoration volunteer programs for the Park Stewardship Program at the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy (5 years), and as the Senior Natural Resources Specialist for Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space (1 year).
