Former Governor David Beasley served as Governor of South Carolina from 1995-1999 and later as Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Programme from 2017-2023. In that role, he led the world’s largest humanitarian organization addressing global hunger, helping expand its reach to millions in need. His leadership was recognized when the World Food Programme was awarded the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts to combat hunger and promote peace in conflict-affected regions.
In 2026, Former Governor Beasley launched his “Breaking Bread” tour, an initiative focused on bridging the partisan divide in America. Join Jones Valley Teaching Farm on Thursday, September 3rd for an intimate dinner with Pardis and Frank Stitt in support of food-based education.

Food is our foundation; people grow here. Jones Valley Teaching Farm uses food as a foundation so young people can lead, create, and grow a healthy future for themselves and their community. We envision communities inspired by food and transformed by youth.
Founded in 2002, Jones Valley Teaching Farm (JVTF) is a Birmingham, AL-based non-profit organization that operates vibrant, student-centered Teaching Farms and the Good School Food Education and Pathways Framework. Using food as a foundation for education and environmental stewardship, pre-K-12 youth discover the joy of learning through immersive lessons at JVTF Teaching Farms and the Center for Food Education. JVTF’s Youth Pathways and Experiences initiative offers Birmingham youth paid work-based learning and enrichment opportunities to explore and identify pathways to employment and higher education. The Center for Food Education connects these resources to the larger Birmingham community and state, serving as an educational resource and destination and increasing JVTF’s reach and impact.
