Perhaps the most famous living American artist in the 1870s and 80s, Toby Edward Rosenthal, was a Prussian Jewish immigrant who grew up in California and painted pictures of melancholy monks and tragic maidens based on medieval lore for an eager American audience.  Rosenthal’s fabulous works, today largely forgotten, are a window into the American mind and to cultural and religious attitudes to the past that still characterize our country today.
