About This Course
BAWT's Wilderness Leadership Training (WLT)
Welcome to the WLT! The WLT is BAWT's five day intensive entry-level backpacking course. The course consists of a full-day Pre-Trip Meeting and five days of backpacking, designed to give you the tools you need to lead youth on multi-day backpacking adventures.
Skills covered include clothing requirements, nutrition, equipment use, map and compass reading, backcountry cooking, group dynamics and more. Role playing exercises are used to give participants a realistic backcountry leadership experience. Food is included, as well as any gear you may borrow from BAWT for the training. No previous experience is necessary. We welcome whatever experience you bring, from those who have never slept in a tent before to those who have spent extensive time in the backcountry.
The course itself is an 5-day, 4 night overnight Tuesday-Saturday backpacking trip in Tahoe National Forest, plus a mandatory pre-trip meeting at our Oakland warehouse on a Saturday before the course. Food from Tuesday breakfast through Saturday lunch is included, as well as any gear you may borrow from BAWT for the training.

- Location: Oakland BAWT Gear Library (1100 57th Ave., Oakland, CA 94621)
- **Don't register if you can't make this meeting!**
- WLT Course:
- Tuesday, July 14, 7am – Saturday, July 18, 8pm (5-day, 4-night)
- Location: Tahoe National Forest (We will arrange participant carpools to the campsite at the pre-trip meeting)
